Which English class should I take? (Guided Self-Placement for English)

All students at Columbia College are permitted to enroll directly in English 1A, the introductory transfer-level English course. The college also offers a support course, English 149, that students can take alongside English 1A to receive additional time with their instructor and help on important skills.

This Guided Self-Placement serves two important roles for you:

  1. By completing it, the registration system will permit you to enroll in English 1A.

  2. You will learn whether English 149 is recommended for your particular learning situation.

Students who received a satisfactory score on an Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) English examination in high school may not have to complete ENGL 1A and may be eligible for a higher placement. If you took one of these tests, check in with a counselor!

Our counselors are standing by to assist you in with any questions you might have about English courses or your English placement. Call (209) 588-5109 to make an appointment with a counselor, email the Counseling office (cccounseling@yosemite.edu), or visit the Counseling webpage for more information.
